 Petersen Senate Sentinel

Dear Friends, Virginians, and Citizens of Fairfax:

"It's the end of the world as we know it.  And I feel fine."

This newsletter may be the first and last message from a Virginia State Senator which quotes the musical group REM.

However, with our upcoming "Eighties Dance Party" (and re-election kickoff) next Monday, I cannot resist the reference.

Over the last four years, I have walked nearly every square inch of the 34th State Senate district.  From the shores of Lake Braddock to the farmer's markets along Route 7, I have witnessed a large swath of Fairfax County from the viewpoint of an interested pedestrian.

In a few days, that will all change.

Next week, the House and Senate will release their redistricting plans.  Those bills will be filed, amended and eventually voted on during the Assembly's redistricting session on April 4, 2011.  Sometime later, we will also take up the maps for the U.S. Congressional districts.

Due to population shifts, everyone's district will change.  I expect to add up a dozen new precincts in 2011.  It's my intention to ensure they are a "community of interest" I can effectively represent at the ground level.

That requires campaign funds.

There will be millions spent in this election cycle by those who want to end the balance of power in Richmond.

As always, the 34th district will be at the eye of the storm.

With your help on March 28th and beyond, we can stand up for a democratic state government, a Democratic State Senate and the vital role of the citizen lawmaker.

Most importantly, we can have fun doing it.

There are 8,000 friends on this email list.  If even 10% of my friends show up on March 28th, it will show them all that .... it may be the end of the world ....

But we feel fine!
